June showed up with sunshine and…. kind of some chilly temperatures.
Swim team season kicked off, and both Charles and Adrien have been absolutely crushing it in the pool. Even though the beginning was definitely something I wasn’t built for. I’m not one for getting into cold pools but apparently that’s just me. Their first practice was quite honestly FREEZING! Which is so bizarre for June. Watching them gain confidence and speed has been one of the biggest highlights of our summer so far. They’re both SO close to making the All-Star team, and we’re all holding our breath at every meet. It’s tougher this year since they are both at the younger end of their age group.

While the kids were racing laps, I was racing the Frederick Solstice 8k. The run felt amazing. I went into it just wanting to get a run in. After one mile I decided I wanted to speed up and race the rest. The goal was to negative split and I did exactly that! A few days later, I earned myself a diagnosis of Morton’s Neuroma. Apparently, my foot didn’t get the memo that summer was supposed to be about nice hot long runs. The hunt for wide toe box shoes turned into its own adventure, but I’m still hoping to heal it naturally and avoid the cortisone route. I literally bought four different shoes. (Finally landed on Altras) I think it’s so insane that my foot all of a sudden stopped fitting. If anyone has experience with this please speak up!

We squeezed in plenty of fun between the pool and podiatry appointments. One of the most memorable days was our trip to the Turkey Hill Ice Cream Experience with friends. We even did the “create-your-own-flavor” class. Adrien loved it, and Charles… well, let’s just say his creative concoction (pineapple + god knows what else) didn’t quite hit the mark. He was the only one disappointed, but we all got a good laugh out of it.

June was filled with water…splash pads, pool days, wet towels everywhere and Maryland summer staples like steamed crab, sticky fingers, and Old Bay seasoning on everything.

My mom came to visit during the last week of June, and we made the most of it. We visited baby cows (Adrien’s dream), bottle fed them, and ate some fresh ice cream. We also managed two city day trips.DC and Annapolis. Lots of coming and going and lots of steps for the ole foot!

As we head into July, we’re sun-kissed, waterlogged, and grateful. June may have had its bumps (and bunions?), but it also brought us laughter, family time, and sweet memories.
Here’s to more of that.
